Movement Relationships: a threesome

Movement Relationships: a threesome

There are three things you can ask yourself when you are working on a movement skill:

  • How am I moving?
  • What am I moving?
  • When am I moving?

How am I moving is the identification of how you are performing the action. Where is your bodyweight? What direction are you moving?

What am I moving identifies the levers you are using to create the action. What lever is the primary lever? Which levers are the supporting levers? What is your anchor?

When am I moving is the identification of when the rotation gets passed on to the next segment.

These three things lead to the timing, sequencing, and coordination required by dynamic movement. Any of these variables can be changed; changing how, what, or when creates a domino effect. Did the dominos fall the way you hoped? If not, change a different variable and see what happens.
